Russian merchant Athanasius Nikitin was the first European who visited India in 1471 and left the description of his journey.
Look back. What happened in those years in Russia and in the surrounding world? The most important event in that distant time was the marriage of Grand Duke Ivan III to the niece of the last emperor of Constantinople, Sophia (Zoe) Palaeologus in 1472. After that marriage Rus was called the Third Rome, and Moscow dukes were called tsars. Two-Headed Eagle appeared to be Russian state seal symbol of imperial power.
It was the time when Russia allocated from the "Golden Horde" and started completely independent foreign policy. But we must not forget that the first wife of Ivan III was the daughter of Prince Boris of Tver, and their marriage at an early age allowed to create a strong alliance between the two most powerful kingdoms of Russia - Tver and Moscow. Accordingly, Sophia Paleolog's marriage became a threat to the unity.
Athanasius was sent "beyond three seas" by Mary, mother of infant Prince of Tver Michael, to look for "something I do not know what", in order to interfere the marriage and to be turned on Moscow throne by herself. Insidious nature of Maria of Tver was well known to all. So Athanasius could not argue with her, and went on a long journey.
The authors try to recreate the atmosphere of a literary source: the film will be a lot of humor, unusual and paradoxical situations, of which Athanasius always comes out on top. The proposed development - is not complete. It is a chosen adaptation of "Going Beyond Three Seas", including the most interesting and entertaining moments adventures of the Russian merchant. |
