The fate of Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera is connected with Russia in a number of ways: Russian painters Angelina Belova and Maria Vorobyova-Stebelskaya gave birth to his children, he was Trotsky’s friend for a long time, he joined the Communist Party for several times, he was in friendly relations with major figures of the young Soviet art such as Eisenstein, Mayakovsky, Erenburg, and finally, it’s to the Soviet Russia that he came in the last years of his life hoping to heal cancer…
It seemed that the vast country situated thousand kilometers away from his native Mexico drew Diego Rivera like a magnet. It’s for the first time that the film "Extraordinary adventures of Diego Diegovich in the Land of the Bolsheviks. Russian Trace Diego Rivera" gives an opportunity to follow the history and background of numerous things that connected the Mexican master with the Soviet land: love affairs and political relations, spiritual and creative, revolutionary and provocative connections. The authors throw light on the reasons of the inexplicable attraction the sultry Mexican giant found in Russia, trying to find an explanation in the hot temper of Rivera himself and in the character of his works. Lupe Rivera, the painter’s daughter, a well-known Marxism-Leninism historian, and writer Petr Vayl share their explanations of Diego’s affection towards the USSR.
Perhaps the spectators will also manage to find some new points of the thin but strong connection between the painter born in a faraway Mexican village Guanjuato, and the young Soviet state – this roaring revolution volcano ejecting myths of the present and the past.
This film may be seen as the continuation of «Frida vs. Frida» by Natalia Nazarova on Frida Kalo, a Mexican painter, the wife of Diego Rivera. |
