The film is a philosophical and historical parable on the relations between the power and comic actors. Fools are almost crowned heads. A fool’s cap is like a crown but turned inside out. A fool is also a king among fools.
Kings laughed at fools, jeered at them, could even beat them. But on the other side, kings tolerated fools’ jokes that were far from inoffensive, listened to fools’ pieces of advice and even trusted their personal and state secrets to fools! It’s enough to remember the relations between fools and kings in Shakespeare’s plays.
Court fools had a very serious business. A fool is not a gag-man or clown as these roles are understood today. He didn’t just entertain the royal court. Fools originate from pagan priests. |
